Rankings

The BWF has five sets of rankings for players:

  • World Ranking (a ranking for all open events except junior international tournaments)
  • HSBC Race to Guangzhou Ranking (a ranking for HSBC BWF World Tour and BWF Tour tournaments only)
  • World Junior Ranking (a ranking for all junior international open tournaments, including up to three world ranking tournaments)
  • World Team Rankings (a quarterly country ranking based on the world ranking of individual players from each country)
  • Olympic / World Championship Qualification Rankings (a notional ranking and a point accrual ranking, both tracking the potential qualifiers for the upcoming Olympic Games or World Championships)

 

The rankings are lists of players/pairs in order of points scored through the respective ranking systems. This is an indicator of performance on court over a period of time.

Except for the World Team Ranking, each of the ranking lists mentioned above include one ranking list for each of the five badminton disciplines – men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles.

Key facts about the Ranking System are:

  • Players win ranking points by playing in tournaments that are graded.
  • Players are ranked if they have played in one or more graded tournaments in the last 52 weeks.
  • The ranking includes up to 10 tournaments with the highest points earned over the last 52 weeks.
  • Players earn ranking points by playing in, and winning matches in tournaments.
  • The higher the level of tournament, the higher the number of ranking points that could be earned.
  • The further a player progresses in a competition, the more points are earned.
  • Players are seeded in tournaments based on their World Ranking or World Junior Ranking.
  • The Olympic Games and World Championships qualification system is based on the World Ranking.
  • World rankings are published on the BWF website every Tuesday, except the World Team Ranking which is published every three months.
