Betting

Betting and gambling on sport is very common worldwide, however those involved in badminton need to be careful as there are many restrictions on betting under BWF regulations.

Section 2.4 of the BWF Statutes – the Code on The Prevention Of The Manipulation Of Competitions – details Corruption Offences, and betting on badminton if you are a player, coach, technical official or working at a tournament is an offence.

Here is a brief summary of who is not allowed to be involved in betting on badminton. We advise you to read the exact wording of the Code on The Prevention Of The Manipulation Of Competitions.

Betting Restrictions under BWF Regulations

  • No player on the BWF World Rankings is allowed to directly / indirectly bet or attempt to bet on any badminton match.
  • No paid / unpaid staff of the BWF / Continental Confederations is allowed to directly / indirectly bet or attempt to be on badminton.

  • No Covered Person shall, directly or indirectly solicit or facilitate any other person to bet on badminton.

National Laws

People participating in badminton and travelling to compete in tournaments need to also be aware of national laws.

In some countries:

  • Betting on sport is illegal.
  • Gambling is illegal
  • On-line sports betting is illegal.

Badminton players should understand the national laws. In some countries where betting and gambling is illegal, it may be that a national player from that country breaks this law even if the betting takes place outside the home country.
