Gender Equity
The Gender Equity & Diversity Commission seeks to strengthen diversity and balanced representation in badminton through the creation of policies, practices and organisational climates that foster the active involvement of women and other under-represented groups across all areas of badminton – on and off the field of play. The Commission provides advice to the Council on policy development. The Terms of Reference for the Commission can be downloaded above.

Gender Equity and Diversity Policy
BWF recognises that the best way to fully reflect the interests and needs of its stakeholders is through fair and representative participation across the organisation. This applies to players, coaches, technical officials, staff, board members and others. Just as we have an even male-female split across our singles and doubles events, we need to find ways to foster gender balance in all our activities. Clearly gender equity and diversity should be an inherent part of everything we do.
The BWF Gender Equity & Diversity Policy describes the aims and principles that guide the organisation in achieving this greater balance, through inclusive leadership and practices, as well as a welcoming organisational culture reflected throughout the different areas of our sport.
Actively promote gender equity, diversity and inclusion across all areas of the badminton community, and in particular, in access to training and education, recruitment for volunteer and staff roles and in leadership positions (BWF Strategic Plan 2024 – 2028).
The Strategic Implementation Plan (2024 – 2028) details a number of goals and strategies around gender equity, inclusion and diversity:
- Ensure that BWF actions and policies reflect the relevant recommendations in the IOC Gender Equality Review Project.
- Monitor the inclusion of efforts towards gender balance in the planning stages of all projects and initiatives (across departments and at all levels of organisation).
- Establish reasonable progressive targets for gender balance on all BWF courses (including, but not limited to, Shuttle Time, Coach Education, National Administrators, Event Management, Player Pathway Programme).
- Ensure that BWF communication and media representation of athletes and other stakeholders reflects balance in gender, as well as in other factors like region, race, and ethnicity.
- Promote needs-based funding opportunities that can be accessed by female candidates who have successfully participated in BWF courses or activities.

Representation on Council
In December 2011, the BWF Council endorsed the goal of achieving an increasing percent of women’s representation on the BWF Council and the goal expressed in the Strategic Implementation Plan (2024 – 2028) is 40 percent of each gender.
Appendix I of the BWF Constitution (see Section 1.1 – BWF Constitution – Page 31) – Geographical and Gender Representation mandates a minimum of 30 percent of each gender.
